Storms do not only refer to strong winds and heavy downpours. As we go through life, we encounter different kinds of storms and these storms often determine who who we are and what become.
There are times in our lives when we are faced with difficult situations, situations that we are often unprepared for. They catch us off guard and therefore become a test of our character. No matter how prepared we think we are, we cannot really grade the magnitude of the effect these storms would have on us and how they would impact who we are as persons.
In times like these, we find out more about ourselves. We discover a hidden side of us, a side we do not even know until the moment that calls for it arises. Life's storms sometimes bring out the best in people. But, of course, as to everything, there's a flipside.
That's one thing that's scary about life's storms. We do not know which side it will bring out of us. We are scared that we might not like what we become. I haven't been through a storm THAT life-altering but I fear that I may not be ready when that time comes. And that's the thing. I have no idea what the universe has in store for me and when. Nobody does.
Our response to these events will help shape us. Whether we bend or break when the wind blows, whether we stay upright or get swept by the current. The unpredictable throes will test our mettle, and in the end... whatever remains of us will continue to go through the rest of life, waiting for the next storm.
Waiting...
Preparing...
and still, whatever preparation would seem futile in the face of the next storm. Why bother preparing if we're just going to go through the same hell again?
Here's why:
Preparing means doing something. Doing something means surviving. Surviving is one step towards living. No matter how hard the wind blows or how strong the currents are, you are proving to the world that you cannot be broken.
Living... it's us raising our middle fingers to the storms of life.
Living... it's us rising from the mud, washing it off our skin, and trudging on through the calm waiting for the next storm. Prepared or not prepared for the next blow, we know that we survived before and we will survive again. By doing something, by placing one step in front of the other, we reinforce that indomitable human spirit. Muddy and torn up we may be, the fact remains: we remain. Maybe a little worse for wear than before, but we remain. And that's the only thing that matters.
Wounds can be sutured, muck washed off... but losing that spark of life, the spark that makes us who we are, that's what we fight to keep.
So, if you're ever going through a storm, hold on to your spark. Don't let the storm bring you down. It's just one of many... know that there are great things to look forward to. All we must do is to fight to remain. Easier said than done in the face of hardship, I know. But I also believe that it's gonna be worth it in the end.
